The
Society History
Below
you can see the schedule for the first Timsbury Flower Show. It
took place on Saturday 1st September 1962 and was held at Timsbury
Secondary School which is now St. Mary's Primary School. It makes
interesting reading especially the childrens section where it
looks as if the essay ond poetry classes coincided with the subjects
the chidren were learning. A total of 57 entries for class 142
and a further 24 entries for class 138 reflected the enthusiasm
of the children at that time. Those were the days, I wonder if
we can get them back, maybe with a little co-operation with the
school?

- I can only go back to 1983 when the total
membership of the Society was 17 and they were all on the committee.
The sole aim of the committee was to run the annual Flower Show
and at that time, due to the high cost of running the show, the
committee were considering not having the marquee and making
do with Conygre Hall only. There were no monthly meetings, no
talks, no trips out and no Spring show, all that came a bit later.
I moved to Timsbury from Stockwood, Bristol in May 1983 and Stockwood
had a thriving Horticultural Society. After talking to the committee
and contacting the Stockwood Chairman, Fred Box, Terry Webber
and myself visited the Stockwood group to see how monthly meetings
were run. Not long after that Timsbury members attended a meeting
at Stockwood to take part in an entertaining gardening quiz.
- This started the ball rolling and monthly
meetings were organised with good quality speakers. One of the
first was Dr. Chris Lovell who spoke on bulbous plants in the
Middle East. Sponsorships were arranged, advertising carried
out and gradually membership increased. One year a mass planting
of spring bulb was carried out in front of the bungalows in the
Avenue.
